David Kimura
David Kimura holds a degree in Graphic Design from the Universidad Iberoamericana (Mexico) and a postgraduate degree in Visual Communication from the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Basel. He was a founding partner of the firms Kimera and Bésame mucho. Since 2005 he has worked with Gabriela Varela specializing in typography and editorial design. They have designed for publishers in Mexico and Europe and their clients include Editorial Arquine, Editorial RM, Museo Nacional de Arte, Fomento Cultural Banamex, Museo Frida Kahlo, Museo Diego Rivera Anahuacalli, Conaculta, INBA, Esrawe Studio, bgp arquitectura, Fundación CIAC and Emblem. He is the author of the typefaces Plasma, Sofía and Chayote. He has also collaborated as designer or art director in the projects Gandhi (with Gabriela Varela, Cristóbal Henestrosa and Raúl Plancarte), Balduina (with the Círculo de Tipógrafos) and Mayathán (with Verónica Monsivais and Ma. de los Ángeles Suárez, under the direction of André Gürtler). His work has been published in books and specialized magazines in Mexico, the United States, Spain, Argentina and Japan. He has received several awards and recognitions from AIGA, Type Directors Club of New York, Type Directors Club of Tokyo, Kasseler Fotoforum, a!, Trama Visual, Quórum, and the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes. He has been teaching since 2001 and since 2006 he has been a professor in the Master’s Degrees of Typographic Design and Editorial Design at the Centro de Estudios Gestalt de Veracruz.
